I was mainly interested in APIs which can be accessed free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the list of the most useful providers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Guardian<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Easy API<br \/>\n&#8211; Acceptable Rate Limits<br \/>\n&#8211; Access to over 1,900,000 pieces of content<br \/>\n&#8211; Free for non-commercial usage<\/li>\n<li><strong>New York Times<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Provides API to search and separate API to download monthly data<br \/>\n&#8211; Rate Limits are quickly reached in the search API<br \/>\n&#8211; Provides data since 1851<br \/>\n&#8211; Free for non-commercial usage<\/li>\n<li><strong>RSS<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Many Free Sources<br \/>\n&#8211; Very limited History<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a conclusion, I was ending up with an architecture which<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>replicates the data sources into a Local Search engine (<a href=\"http:\/\/lucene.apache.org\/solr\/\">Solr<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>provides some Utility classes to simplify different scenarios<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/nbviewer.jupyter.org\/gist\/pschatzmann\/056a8305a8823f7d0b5c057d07d8d76f\">this Gist<\/a> I provide a quick overview of the possibilities to access news headlines using functionality which is available in the JVM. The examples are implemented in Scala using <a href=\"https:\/\/jupyter.org\/\">Jupyter<\/a> with the <a href=\"http:\/\/beakerx.com\/\">BeakerX kernel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also have a <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.docker.com\/r\/pschatzmann\/news-digest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Docker Image.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I have spent some time to investigate the options to access the history of news articles via an API.
