It enables low-power, low-data-rate wireless connectivity for IoT, smart home, and industrial sensors, allowing devices to operate on batteries for years. Here in Europe it uses the <span class=\"T286Pc\" data-sfc-cp=\"\" jscontroller=\"fly6D\" jsuid=\"ZGCGu_s\" data-processed=\"true\">Primary Sub-GHz Band<strong class=\"Yjhzub\" jscontroller=\"zYmgkd\" jsuid=\"ZGCGu_t\" data-processed=\"true\">:<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>868.0\u2013868.6 MHz.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is used e.g. by the <span>smart home protocols<\/span> <strong>Thread\/Matter and Zigbee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These smart home protocols are suited to <strong>control audio<\/strong>, but they are too slow to transmit the audio data directly. So I was wondering if we can use the IEEE 802.15.4 layer directly to transmit audio.<\/p>\n<p>Some ESP32 microcontrollers variants (e.g. the C6) provide access to <span>IEEE 802.15.4. Therefore<\/span> I published an <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/pschatzmann\/ESP32TransceiverIEEE802_15_4\">IEEE 802.15.4 Arduino Library<\/a> for sending and receiving data in an easy way e.g. using Arduino Streams.<\/p>\n<p>There, I was <strong>measuring<\/strong> a maximum thruput of<strong> 23100 bytes\/second<\/strong>. This is <strong>185 kbps<\/strong> which gives quite a few options for audio:<\/p>\n<p><strong>For music under 185 kbps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opus 128\u2013160 kbps<\/li>\n<li>AAC 128\u2013160 kbps<\/li>\n<li>ADPCM 44.1k mono<\/li>\n<li>ADPCM 22.05k stereo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For speech:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Opus 48\u201396 kbps<\/li>\n<li>AAC 96 kbps<\/li>\n<li>16 kHz mono PCM 8 bits<\/li>\n<li>8 kHz mono PCM 16 bits<\/li>\n<li>Telephony protocols (GSM, G.711, G.722, G.726, G.729)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note that this increases the <strong>power consumption<\/strong>. You must also ensure that <strong>no other devices access the same channel<\/strong>, as it will be fully occupied by the audio data.<\/p>\n<p>Another interesting use would be to implement your <strong>custom remote control protocols<\/strong>: So e.g. you can use this library as transmission medium for the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/pschatzmann\/SpektrumSatellite\">Spectrum Satellite<\/a> protocol..<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IEEE 802.15.4 is a technical standard defining the Physical and Media Access Control layers for Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks.
