{"id":1435,"date":"2020-10-01T22:39:46","date_gmt":"2020-10-01T20:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/?p=1435"},"modified":"2021-12-25T15:22:00","modified_gmt":"2021-12-25T14:22:00","slug":"the-synthesis-toolkit-in-c-stk-for-esp32-microcontroller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/2020\/10\/01\/the-synthesis-toolkit-in-c-stk-for-esp32-microcontroller\/","title":{"rendered":"The Synthesis ToolKit (STK) Library for Arduino &#8211; Lessens Learned"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Overview<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ccrma.stanford.edu\/software\/stk\/\">Synthesis ToolKit in C++ (STK)<\/a> is a set of <strong>open source audio signal processing<\/strong> and <strong>algorithmic synthesis<\/strong> classes written in the C++ programming language.<\/p>\n<p>You can find further information in the original <a href=\"\/STK.me\">Readme of the STK Project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like many other sound libraries it originates from an University (Princeton) and can look back at a very long history: it was created in <strong>1995<\/strong>. In the 90s the computers had limited processor power and memory available. In todays world we can get some cheap Microcontrollers, which provide almost the same capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of <strong>this project<\/strong> has been to implemented the STK as <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/pschatzmann\/Arduino-STK\"><strong>Arduino Library<\/strong><\/a> and I hardly knew what I was getting into.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Some things were <strong>easy<\/strong> to resolve: e.g. I needed to copy the header files into the src directory because Arduino wants it that way.<\/li>\n<li>Some others were <strong>more difficult<\/strong>: I started to add FreeRTOS functionality to provide the missing multiprocessing and locking functionality. In hindsight that was a waste of time and I came to the conclusion that it is much better just to use the sound generation part of the framework and to use the <strong>standard Arduino functionality for doing input and output<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/2020\/09\/24\/the-synthesis-toolkit-skt-library-for-the-arduino-esp32\/\">easy introduction<\/a> on how to use STK in Arduino.<\/p>\n<h2>Unsupported Functionality<\/h2>\n<p>Use the Arduino standard functionality instead of the following<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>RtAudioError<\/li>\n<li>RtMidi   <\/li>\n<li>RtMidiError   <\/li>\n<li>RtMidiIn      <\/li>\n<li>RtMidiOut   <\/li>\n<li>RtWvIn (stk)   <\/li>\n<li>RtWvOut (stk)   <\/li>\n<li>TcpClient (stk)   <\/li>\n<li>TcpServer (stk)   <\/li>\n<li>Mutex (stk)   <\/li>\n<li>UdpSocket (stk)   <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Additional Functionality<\/h2>\n<h3>Output<\/h3>\n<p>We provide the following additional Arduino specific output functionality:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ArdStreamBinaryOut<\/li>\n<li>ArdStreamHexOut<\/li>\n<li>ArdStreamOut<\/li>\n<li>ArdI2SOut<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Raw Files<\/h3>\n<p>The framework is using raw files for <strong>some instruments<\/strong> (e.g. Mandolin). These files have been converted to binary arrays. It took me <strong>more time then expected<\/strong> to figure out how to resolve the restrictions coming from the fact that this data resides in program (flash) memory. Details can be found in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/2020\/09\/26\/the-synthesis-toolkit-stk-w-o-files\/\">related Blog<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3>MIDI<\/h3>\n<p>The implementation of MIDI was quite easy and I have added quite a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/2020\/09\/28\/the-synthesis-toolkit-skt-library-for-the-arduino-esp32-midi\/\">MIDI related classes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Caveats<\/h2>\n<p>I did not have the time to test every functionality, so we might still find some issues.<\/p>\n<p>It also has never been my intention to provide a full implementation of all MIDI networking functionality that is out there but the goal was to cover the integration cases that use <strong>standard Arduino<\/strong> functionality.<\/p>\n<h2>Installation<\/h2>\n<p>Download the project as zip and install the file in the Arduino IDE via -> Sketch -> Include Library -> Add ZIP Library or execute the following command in the Arduino Library Folder<\/p>\n<pre><code>git clone https:\/\/github.com\/pschatzmann\/Arduino-STK.git\n<\/code><\/pre>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview The Synthesis ToolKit in C++ (STK) is a set of open source audio signal processing and algorithmic synthesis classes written in the C++ programming language.
