{"id":1255,"date":"2020-03-27T22:29:17","date_gmt":"2020-03-27T21:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2024-03-21T08:02:21","modified_gmt":"2024-03-21T07:02:21","slug":"1255","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/2020\/03\/27\/1255\/","title":{"rendered":"A Simple Arduino Bluetooth Music Receiver Library for the ESP32"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espressif.com\/en\/products\/hardware\/esp32\/overview\">ESP32<\/a> provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A2DP\">Bluetooth A2DP API<\/a> that receives sound data e.g. from your <strong>Mobile Phone<\/strong> and makes it available via a callback method. The output is a <strong>PCM data stream <\/strong>decoded from SBC format. The documentation can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.espressif.com\/projects\/esp-idf\/en\/latest\/esp32\/api-reference\/peripherals\/i2s.html\">here.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I%C2%B2S\">I2S<\/a> is an electrical serial bus interface standard used for connecting digital audio devices together. It is used to communicate <strong>PCM audio data <\/strong>between integrated circuits in an electronic device.<\/p>\n<p>So we can just feed the input from Bluetooth to the <strong>I2S<\/strong> output: An example for this <strong>A2DP Data Sink<\/strong> from Expressive can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/espressif\/esp-idf\/tree\/master\/examples\/bluetooth\/bluedroid\/classic_bt\/a2dp_sink\">Github<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately this example did not make me happy so I decided to convert it into a simple C++ class that is very easy to use from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/en\/guide\/environment\">Arduino Software IDE.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Simple I2S Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here is the simplest example which just uses the proper default settings:<\/p>\n<pre><code>#include \"BluetoothA2DPSink.h\"\n\nBluetoothA2DPSink a2dp_sink;\n\nvoid setup() {\na2dp_sink.start(\"MyMusic\");\n}\n\nvoid loop() {\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>This creates a new Bluetooth device with the name &#8220;MyMusic&#8221; and the output will be sent to the following default <strong>I2S pins<\/strong>:<br \/>\n&#8211; bck_io_num =&gt; GPIO 26,<br \/>\n&#8211; ws_io_num =&gt; GPIO 25,<br \/>\n&#8211; data_out_num =&gt; GPIO 22<\/p>\n<p>These need to be connected to an external <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital-to-analog_converter\">external DAC<\/a>. You can define your own pins easily by calling the set_pin_config method.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Output to the Internal DAC <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can also send the output directly to the <strong>internal DAC of the ESP32 <\/strong>by providing the corresponding <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.espressif.com\/projects\/esp-idf\/en\/latest\/esp32\/api-reference\/peripherals\/i2s.html\">i2s_config<\/a>:<\/p>\n<pre><code>#include \"BluetoothA2DPSink.h\"\n\nBluetoothA2DPSink a2dp_sink;\n\nvoid setup() {\nstatic const i2s_config_t i2s_config = {\n.mode = (i2s_mode_t) (I2S_MODE_MASTER | I2S_MODE_TX | I2S_MODE_DAC_BUILT_IN),\n.sample_rate = 44100, \/\/ corrected by info from bluetooth\n.bits_per_sample = (i2s_bits_per_sample_t) 16, \/* the DAC module will only take the 8bits from MSB *\/\n.channel_format = I2S_CHANNEL_FMT_RIGHT_LEFT,\n.communication_format = I2S_COMM_FORMAT_I2S_MSB,\n.intr_alloc_flags = 0, \/\/ default interrupt priority\n.dma_buf_count = 8,\n.dma_buf_len = 64,\n.use_apll = false\n};\n\na2dp_sink.set_i2s_config(i2s_config);\na2dp_sink.start(\"MyMusic\");\n\n}\n\nvoid loop() {\n}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>The output goes now to the <strong>DAC pins G26\/G27<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Installation<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The library<\/strong> with the examples can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/pschatzmann\/esp32_bt_music_receiver\">Github<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>This is the perfect functionality to revive my old <strong>Technics SU-Z2 Amplifier: <\/strong>I can use it now by streaming my music from my <strong>Android Phone or IPAD. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/su-z2-300x131.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"131\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/su-z2-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/su-z2.png 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Initially I wanted to use the ESP32 also to stream some Internet Radios via WIFI using http &#8211; but in the end it turned out to be much simpler to use one of the many Music Apps from a Mobile Phone\u00a0 with Bluetooth as output!<\/p>\n<p>The only task left now is to build a casing&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_20200327_170046-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"627\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_20200327_170046-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_20200327_170046.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Next Steps<\/h3>\n<p>To implement some more scenarios please have a look at the examples of my <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/pschatzmann\/arduino-audio-tools\">audio tools library<\/a> or my related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pschatzmann.ch\/home\/category\/machine-sound\/\">Blogs<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ESP32 provides a Bluetooth A2DP API that receives sound data e.g. from your Mobile Phone and makes it available via a callback method.
